One thing I have not seen emphasized in current coverage of the new COVID-19 Omicron variant is that this is a developing situation. The new variant was only recently detected and medical personnel across the world will probably need weeks before a clear picture of any changes in infectivity and severity become clear. Drastic actions based on the emergence of a new variant alone are over reacting. Locations that are already seeing an increase in cases instituting new shut-downs or mask mandates though are taking correct precautions independent of whatever may happen with omicron.
As always being vaccinated, wearing masks, social distancing, and hand washing will slow the spread of not just COVID strains but also the flu which is now starting to circulate. If you’re more than 6 months from your last mRNA COVID vaccine or more than 1 month from the J&J vaccine then go get your booster when you can take a few days to recover. By being proactive you can minimize your chances of catching COVID now and giving rise to any new variants.
